Ryde

Ryde is a bustling town full of interesting shops, pubs, cafes, restaurants and wine bars. There really is something for everyone here and Ryde’s huge golden sand beach is an added bonus. This is a great place for safe swimming and because the beach is several miles long, you can always find somewhere to settle down and relax for the day. Keep your eyes peeled for a great range of activities including croquet, cycle hire, go karting, ice skating, or kitesurfing.

Ryde is known as The Gateway to the island. The catamaran from Portsmouth docks at the end of Ryde Pier, and the connecting Island Line train can take you as far as Shanklin.  Travel east from Ryde by bus, bicycle or on foot, to see some lovely coastal villages, each with their own unique character. There’s an interesting walk to Seaview, an unspoiled village which becomes a busy sailing centre in the summer. Then trek to Bembridge, another good area for sailing, with a delightful harbour and a pleasant beach with rock pools with good places to eat and drink, too.

Buses to all parts of the Island depart from Ryde Esplanade. Alternatively catch the train to Shanklin via Smallbrook (which links to the excellent IW Steam Railway), Brading, Sandown and Lake.
